Comeback after 20 years: New Panda medal at the Munich Coin Fair “Numismata”

Twenty years after the last special edition on the occasion of the Numismata Coin Fair in Munich, a special meda from China appears in 2017, which was reported in issue 04/2017 of the magazine “MünzenRevue” (Coin Review). A summary of the article can be found here.

For the first time in the history of the China Panda medals, a show panda edition was developed as a complete set for an international coin fair: the set includes four medals at 1/10, 1/4, 1/2 and 1 ounces. This is worth noting because it differes from the usual practice in China of using the metric measure and to struck the panda bullion coins with the weight of exactly 30 grams.

The special design is worth seeing, not just for diehard Chinese collectors: On the front of the medal is a panda in front of a bamboo smoke, on its belly sits a young animal. On the back are the Chinese Temple of the Sun and the “Frauenkirche” in Munich, as well as the inscription “2017 Munich International Coin Show” as the internationalname of the Munich Numismata, in English and Chinese. The issue was produced in the ShenZhen GuoBao Mint in proof quality and is limited to 2017 sets worldwide. The sets are delivered in a red coin box with a certificate of authenticity. The medals are individually encapsulated.
